Warriors off to program's best start with thrilling five-set win over SF State

TURLOCK — Momentum swung from team to team like a pendulum Saturday night as Stanislaus State won a five-set, stressful, thriller over San Francisco State inside Fitzpatrick Arena.

Alana Wilson-Reid posted another 20-kill match and Sierra Adams spiked 19 as the duo led the Warriors to the program's best start to a season. Stan State is now 10-4 overall and 3-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association after winning three straight matches.

The 2015 team begun the year 9-4 but lost its 14th match en route to a CCAA tournament appearance, the program's first.

When it was all said and done, the Warriors won 25-23, 20-25, 25-18, 22-25, 18-16.

Setter Breanna Cannon also set a career-best with 55 assists, which followed a 47-assist match Friday night against Cal State East Bay. Yisel Perez had 11 kills and 18 digs, Libero Mya Marshall had 17 digs and Jordon Wilson helped on five blocks. Cannon also had three assisted blocks.

In fact, it was Cannon and Wilson who ended the match at the net, stuffing a shot by SF State's Drew Morris.

But way before that exciting finish, the match went both ways with teams taking turns throwing punches. However, when Wilson-Reid was on the court, she was nearly unstoppable for the second straight night. She followed her 20-kill Friday night with another 20-kill match on Saturday. This time she hit .441 on 34 attempts (five errors).

In two matches, Wilson-Reid was 40-for-65 with six errors for a .523 attacking percentage.

And when Adams was on the court with Wilson-Reid, the Warriors were powerful with Cannon having options. Adams, who had two 18-kill matches this season, hit .268 on the night. Together, the duo accounted for 60 percent of the team's kills against SF State.

In the fifth and decisive set, and leading 14-10 with set-point, SF State rolled off four points to tie. Teams traded points until Adams even the score at 16-16. An attack by Bailey Johnson went wide before Cannon and Wilson blocked a Morris spike to end the contest.

San Francisco State (7-6, 2-4 CCAA) was led by Payton Jensen's 56 assists, Jessica Haynie's 18 kills and Maura Donovan's 20 digs.
