Stanislaus State posts epic & historic victory at Sonoma State

ROHNERT PARK — The Stanislaus State women's volleyball team ended a long drought against perennial power Sonoma State Friday night with a four-set win.

The Warriors' 15-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-18 win over Sonoma State snapped a 20-match losing streak against the Seawolves as Stan State moves into a tie for first place in the CCAA. Stan State improved to 11-5 and 4-4 in the CCAA North, in a three-way tie for the top of the standings.

Not only did the Warriors beat Sonoma State. They did it in Rohnert Park for the first time since Nov. 1, 2002. Stan State was 2-27 against Sonoma State since then. The last Warrior victory over SSU was Sept. 28, 2007 in Turlock. In fact, the Warriors have won just five sets in the last 20 meetings.

All that changed Friday night.

Sierra Adams had 22 kills for her second consecutive 20-kill match this week. She banged out 22 kills on 40 tries with five errors for an awesome .425 hitting percentage. It was an encore of her performance Tuesday night in Hayward when she had 21 kills (.372).

Ramey Gardner chipped in 13 kills and Jordon Wilson added eight. Wilson also had four blocks. Breanna Cannon dished out another 45 assists and is just eight assists away from 500 this season. Mya Marshall had 15 digs and Cannon 13.

After dropping the first set 25-15, the Warriors rallied in the second. Trailing 15-16, the Warriors scored eight straights points to change the momentum. Adams had four kills during that run. In set three, the Warriors trailed early and again came back. They scored the final four points to wrap-up the set win.

With momentum on their side, the Warriors took off to a 10-5 lead in the fourth and used a five-point run to build an 18-10 lead they never gave up.
