POMONA — Winning on the road in the California Collegiate Athletic Association is a difficult task. But the Stanislaus State women's soccer team show incredible heart and determination in taking a sweet 1-0 win at Cal Poly Pomona Friday afternoon.
Sadie Ortiz's goal in the 42nd minute turned out to be the only one of the match as the Warriors grabbed a conference road win to improve to 5-3-2 overall and 2-2-1 in league play.
"We talked a lot this week about commitment and effort. I'm so proud of our team for putting that commitment on full display tonight," head coach
Gabriel Bolton said.
Statistically, Cal Poly Pomona (4-4-1, 0-2-1) dominated. The Broncos controlled the pace and possessions and out-shot the Warriors, 24-6. However, the final score was what mattered.
Ortiz's left-footer from 30 yards out at 41:57 gave Stan State the lead going into the intermission as they held-on. Pomona poured it on in the second half, too, with a 14-2 shot advantage. However the Broncos only managed three shots on goal.
Alyssa Herrman had eight saves in net to help preserve the win.
"Wining on the road in this conference takes everything you have. We gave that tonight," Bolton added.
The away victory is the team's first in 2018 and the first CCAA regular season win in Pomona since Oct. 14, 2011. Stan State did post a CCAA Tournament on that pitch during the 2016 CCAA Championships tournament semifinal game.
