Team effort, 3-pointers result in Stan State victory over SF State

SAN FRANCISCO — Strength in Numbers. Right?

Borrowing the motto by the professional Warriors, the Stanislaus State Warriors used a complete team effort Thursday night to post a great 81-76 win over San Francisco State.

Five players were in double digits in scoring and a total of seven players scored at least eight points as Stan State improved to 7-8 overall and 4-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

These Warriors have now won three of their last four games.

The Warriors shot 61 percent from behind the 3-point arch, nailing 14 three-pointers to beat the bigger Gators (10-6, 6-5 CCAA). It was the most 3-pointers in a game since Nov. 12, 2016 when Stanislaus made 14 against Academy of Art.

It was also the most three-pointers in a CCAA game since Jan. 1, 2016 in a home contest against Cal State L.A. The Warriors were 14 of 29 on that New Year's Day. The CCAA-era record is 20 made in a game, on Nov. 26, 2005, versus Bethany.

Andy Cleaves scored 15, Ty Davis had 14 and Jacob Danhoff with 12 points. Mat Bradshaw and Jourdan Johnson each had 11. Cleaves, Bradshaw and Danhoff each made three three-pointers. Joseph Alvarez and Rolaun Dunham each chipped in eight points.

Stan State also shot a crisp 51 percent overall from the floor and made 17 of 22 free throws.

The Warriors ran out to a 13-point, 30-17, lead early in the game and maintained the upper hand with the hot shooting night. With seven three-pointers in the first half, Stan State took a 36-32 lead at halftime.

Halfway through the second half, the Gators took a two-point lead with a trey. But the Warriors used a 10-0 run to take charge. That run was highlighted by a Cleaves three-pointer and capped by another long range bomb by Danhoff for a 67-59 lead.

Jase Wickliffe was 6 for 6 on three-pointers to lead SF State with 18 points. The Gators made 13 three-pointers.

Stanislaus State had just nine players in uniform for Thursday night's game.
