Huge disparities at free throw line again the difference in OT loss

TURLOCK — The Warriors were up to the challenge against the second-place team in the CCAA but Stanislaus State was victimized at the free throw line as Cal State East Bay escaped with a 69-62 win in overtime Saturday night.

The Pioneers went to the line for 35 attempts and made 26 of them to improve to 11-2 in league play (16-3 overall). The Warriors dropped to 8-10, 5-9 CCAA after splitting the week with both games in extra time.

Saturday night, the Warriors went to the line a total of five times and went 5-for-8. That's a 27 free-throw attempt difference.

Cal State East Bay came in with fresh legs -- the Pioneers were off on Thursday while Stan State beat Cal State Monterey Bay in OT — to out-last the Warriors.

With the varsity team from his alma mater Riverbank High School in the stands, Rolaun Dunham picked up a double-double night with team highs 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Ty Davis scored 14 points, Andy Cleaves added 13 points with seven rebounds and Darius Scott chipped in 11.

Despite the fact that CSUEB made just one of its first 11 shots, Stan State only led by three, 29-26, at halftime. That's because the Pioneers were 7 of 8 at the free throw line. CSUEB did make seven of its next 16 tries to erase a 10-point deficit.

The Warriors went to the line once and the attempt was waved off on a lane violation.

In the second half, the Pioneers again struggled from the field but made up for it at the charity stripe, going 15-for-20. The Warriors were 5-for-7.

The Pioneers out-rebounded the Warriors 46-39 and scored 16 points off Stanislaus turnovers.

Two Saturdays ago, at home against UC San Diego, the Tritons outscored the Warriors at the free throw line 24-to-7. UCSD had 29 tries against Stan State's nine that night.
