HAYWARD — Cal State East Bay outscored Stanislaus State by 13 points and held the Warriors to just 18 in the second half as the host Pioneers rallied for a 63-59 win Thursday night.
The second-half let-down spoiled a solid night for
Andy Cleaves, who scored 21 points and pulled six rebounds — both game-highs.
The Warriors were hoping to start the new year with a win, instead dropped their fourth straight game to fall to 4-7 overall and 1-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Cal State East Bay held Stan State to 25 percent shooting in the second half while hitting 44 percent of its tries (including five three-pointers) to improve to 11-2 and 7-1 CCAA.
Stanislaus State were seemingly on the way to upsetting one of the top teams in the conference in the first half. The Warriors led by as many as 12 points late in the first half after a Cleaves layup with 3:08 to go .
Using a 48.5 percent shooting half, the Warriors rolled to a 41-32 halftime lead.
A see-saw battle in the second half led to a Cleaves three-pointer at 4:43 left to tie the game at 54-54. However, CSUEB followed with its own triple by Evan Wardlow and didn't trail again. Wardlow ended up with 21 points and 7 rebounds.
Ty Davis chipped in 12 points and had five rebounds with six assists.
Darius Scott scored nine with six boards and
Joseph Alvarez added eight points.
The Warriors will travel to Seaside to take on Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday in a 3 p.m. matinee. CSUMB has lost 28 straight games dating back to Dec. 8, 2017. The Otters are 0-12, 0-7 this season.
