Stan State comes up just short in strong comeback at San Marcos

SAN MARCOS — The Warriors made a valiant effort in rallying back from down two games to zero before falling to host Cal State San Marcos, 3-1, Friday night to begin the two-match trip to San Diego County.
 
Cal State San Marcos held off a hot and surging Stanislaus State team in the 25-22, 25-23, 23-25, 25-22, tight decision. The Cougars improved to 12-7, 6-4 CCAA with the Warriors ending a five-match winning streak to fall to 11-5, 6-3. Stan State remains tie for first with Chico State in the CCAA North as Chico State lost at UC San Diego.
 
Top Warrior Performers:
Breanna Cannon posted 35 assists to add to her career totals to 1,692 assists in three seasons. She is now No. 5 on the Stan State career top 10 list, surpassing Tara Hillis (2001-02). Next up on the chart, at No. 4, is Maddi Seidl (2015-16) with 1,893.
•  Sierra Adams led the Warriors with 17 kills on 29 swings (six errors) for a .379 attacking percentage. It was her third straight 10-plus kill match and her fifth double-digit kills match this season since returning from a preseason injury.
• Kiara Erving had a career-high nine total blocks with one solo.
Rachel Klopfer had 10 kills, her third consecutive 10-kill match and fourh straight double-digits kills contest.
Yisel Perez smacked nine kills with seven assists.
 
Key Moments of the Match:
• The Warriors rolled out to an 8-1 lead in second three, but CSUSM did come back and made it a tight match. Stan State did have the last say with four straight Sierra Adams kills to win the match.
• The score was 23-23 in set two and 22-22 in set four before San Marcos finished off each set unanswered.

Of Note:
• This was just the teams' six head-to-head match since CSUSM became a Division II program. CSUSM has won four of six matches in the series.
• Turlock's Emily Vander Weide led San Marcos with 19 kills.
 
Up Next:
The Warriors will take on another CCAA South power UC San Diego Saturday night in La Jolla. The match is a 7 p.m. and will be on ESPN3.
