Warriors split on first day of MSUB Desert Stinger tournament

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Warriors began their 2019 season at the MSUB Desert Stinger Tournament going 1-1 with an incredible victory over Academy of Art and a loss in the nightcap to Saint Martin's.

The Stanislaus State softball team started off the day with an 11-3 mercy-rule win over Academy of Art before a loss against Saint Martin's 2-7, later in the day.

Stan State started the day off with the 8-run rule win against Art U (a 40-win and NCAA tournament team in 2018) in five innings. The first three innings were dry for the Warriors until they exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Kylie Ragsdale pitched her first win of the season, throwing in all five innings and went 2-for-3 at the plate. Maya Yoshiura went 2-for-3 with two homers and drove in four runs. Cassandra Wenn went 2-for-3 earning two RBI with a homerun. Kaitlyn Doyle went 3-for-4.

The bottom of the fourth was long for the Academy of Art as the Warriors scored nine runs, nine hits and only one left on base at the end of the inning. The Warriors would score two more in the fifth to close out the game early with their lead of eight over the Urban Knights.

The women lost their momentum as they entered the second game of the day only scoring one in the third and one in the sixth.

Kyndra Marzorini went the distance in the circle. Marzorini also had one RBI at the plate. Yoshiura was the leader of game two going 1-for-2. Deja Guzman went 1-for-2 as well and Aliyah Garvin doubled.

Stan State will continue in the Desert Stinger Tournament Saturday with two games. The Warriors will face Western Washington at 11:30 a.m. and Hawaii Pacific at 4:30 p.m.
