POMONA –Despite the loss to Cal Poly Pomona Thursday night, the Warriors were barely behind the Broncos the entire game. The Warriors really kept up with the Broncos for the entire game and came out of two quarters ahead for points. Despite the small gap between the teams, Stan State fell 65-69.
Stanislaus State falls to 7-16 overall and 6-13 in conference while Cal Poly Pomona succeeds to 21-4 overall and 17-3 in the CCAA.
The Broncos are currently second in the conference and to keep such a close gap on the team, the Warriors played an impressive game overall. Several of the women played incredible games and reached season highs.
Kyanna Davis shot an incredible 20 points which is just four shy of her season best. Davis also led in rebounds with 11 which is a new career high and had another season high with six steals.
Caitlin Keding shot 13 points which is only three short of her season high of 16 also adding to the team's 65 points.
Angelica Baylon came out strong on Thursday once again leading the team with nine assists and six steals.
Brittney Livingston and
Kaleigh Taylor were both leading players in rebounds along with Davis. Livingston had eight rebounds and Taylor had nine.
As a team, the Warriors scored 30 points in the paint and 24 points off turnovers.
The Broncos visited the free throw line a lot more than the Warriors and this is could be seen as the reason for defeat. In the last five minutes of the game, the Warriors were up 55-53 until the Broncos successfully shot two three pointers followed by 10 successful free throws. The Broncos went 21 for 29 at the free throw line when the Warriors were only 4-for-9.
Monica Todd led the Broncos with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Todd also had five steals. Jordyn Shane shot ten points, seven rebounds and had seven assists. Jayda Villareal and Kasey Smit were both in double digits for points. Villareal with 13 and Smit with 11.
Coming out of the first half, Stan State only trailed by four and going into the fourth quarter they only trailed by one point. The gap between the teams never reached double digits.
The Warriors will travel to San Bernardino on Saturday to take on the Coyotes at 5:30 p.m.
