ROHNERT PARK — The Stan State baseball pitching staff keeps dealing — dealing zeros on the scoreboard, that is.
With more stellar pitching performances in Friday's 2-1 win over Sonoma State, Warrior pitchers have not yielded an earned run in the last 22 1/3 innings.
Behind another awesome start by
Chase Wheatcroft and another homer by
Grant Bunker, Stanislaus State runs its winning streak to five games to begin the conference season 3-0. The Warriors, ranked No. 6 in the West Region this week, improved to 7-2 overall.
The Warriors' only losses were the double-dip sweep by No. 8 Azusa Pacific on Feb. 8.
Wheatcroft gave up just two hits in seven innings while striking out five to earn his first victory of the season. The closer-turned starting ace has made back-to-back quality starts with 7-plus shutout innings each time. He has not allowed a run since one of those losses against APU, blanking opponents in the last 18 1/3 innings on the mound.
In Friday's series opener against the Seawolves (1-4, 0-2 CCAA),
Tommy Stropky threw a hitless eighth and
Brandon Scott gave up an unearned run in the ninth to earn a save.
Bunker had two of the team's three hits, including a sixth inning solo homer to left that made it 2-0. A double-steal by
Jacob Garcia and
Alexis Paz in the second scored the Warriors' first run.
Sonoma State managed to manufacture a run in the ninth to avoid the shutout. A hit-batsman, a fielding error, a passed ball and a grounder to first plated the run without a hit.
Stan State pitching staff has put up zeros since the sixth inning of that 14-11 slugfest victory at Chico State last Sunday. Then the Warriors won that nightcap behind Wheatcroft and Scott's combined 2-0 shutout.
