Warriors nearly hit century mark for great road win at Cal State San Bernardino

SAN BERNARDINO — Two Warriors scored in the 20s as Stanislaus State nearly hit the century mark Saturday night as they beat Cal State San Bernardino, 97-88, to avenge an earlier defeat to split the season series.

Andy Cleaves scored 28 points and Ty Davis scored 22 to lead the Warriors as they rebound from a heartbreaking loss two nights earlier in Pomona.

Stan State is now 11-13 overall and 8-12 in the CCAA. The Warriors keep their slim postseason hopes alive with the win with two important home games next week. Stan State would have to win both games and hope for losses by Humboldt State and Chico State.

The Warriors had their best shooting game of the season in the big Coussoulis Arena. They shot 61.2 percent on the night thanks to a scorching 17 of 22 from the field (77.3 percent) in the second half.

Cleaves led the way with 28 points on 11 of 17 shooting after going 0-for-7 Thursday night in the head-to-head match-up against William Christmas as two of the top scorers in the CCAA. Cleaves now averages 15.7 points a CCAA game, behind Christian Bayne of UC San Diego (16.0).

Cleaves had six of the team's 11 three-pointers en route to his eighth 20-point game this season. His season high was 29 points against Humboldt State on Homecoming Night, Feb. 9, in Turlock.

Davis also poured in 22 points by getting to the free throw line. He was 13 of 14 at the foul line to go with five assists.

The Warriors led by as many as 19 points early in the second half.

Cal State San Bernardino, 15-12, 11-10 CCAA, had five players in double figures.

The 97-points scored is the most by the Warriors in a CCAA game since a triple overtime 108-100 win over Humboldt State on Feb. 19, 2016. It is also the most points scored in a CCAA game in regulation since a 99-94 win over Sonoma State on Feb. 25, 2005.
