Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Turnovers led to Cal State L.A. comeback win over Stan State

TURLOCK — It is tough to win a basketball game when the other team shoot 12 more times when they got extra possessions, but that's what happened Thursday night as visiting Cal State L.A. rallied from a 15-point deficit to up-end host Stanislaus State.

The Warriors didn't help their own cause, turning the ball over 28 times — more than twice the season average — in falling to 11-14 overall and 8-13 in the CCAA. With Humboldt State winning its home game to secure the eighth and final CCAA tournament berth, the Warriors will end their season Saturday on Senior Night.

Darius Scott continues to be a shining star of late for Stan State as the junior led all players with 20 points, six assists and four steals. Andy Cleaves had 15 points and Rolaun Dunham scored 14. Jacob Danhoff led with eight rebounds and Cleaves pulled seven boards.

Scott is averaging 15.7 points a game in the last six games.

Stanislaus State came out on fire and was shooting around 70 percent for much of the first half. That hot-start led the Warriors to an advantage as large as 13 in the first half. The Warriors also led by 15 early in the second half after a 10-0 run that included three-pointers by Mat Bradshaw and Scott.

However, Cal State L.A turned extra possessions into more shots to stage the comeback. The Golden Eagles used an 18-3 run to tie the game at 51-51 with 9:41 to go.

A tight battle ensued until a couple of wasted Warrior possessions. Then a Jordan Rogers three-pointer with 21 seconds left finally resulted in the Warrior loss.

Cal State L.A. (17-11, 13-9 CCAA) was led by Rogers' 16 points. The Golden Eagles shot 20 of 56 (35.7 percent) compared to the Warriors 24-for-44 as Stan State finished with a 54.5 percent shooting night.

LA scored 36 points off turnovers and out-scored Stanislaus, 14-0, on second chances.

Seniors Cleaves, Bradshaw, Danhoff and Dunham will play in their last game on Saturday when the Warriors host Cal State Dominguez Hills.
