TURLOCK — Led by seniors
Andy Cleaves and
Rolaun Dunham, the Stanislaus State men's basketball team brought down the house a number of times to beat Humboldt State, 88-84, on the biggest night of the year at Fitzpatrick Arena.
In front of more than 1,250 fans on Homecoming Night, the Warriors drained three's in the first half and out-hustled HSU in the second half for the victory. Stanislaus State improved to 10-11 overall and is 7-10 in CCAA play as the Warriors get within a game-and-a-half of eighth place heading into the stretch run.
Cleaves scored 29 points Thursday night to lead all players and with that total he ascends atop of the leader board, trying William Christmas of Cal Poly Pomona as the CCAA's top scorer during conference play. Cleaves now averages 16.4 points per league game after netting his season high. It was his eighth 20-point game this season.
Cleaves was 9 of 15 from the field and made 9 of 10 free throws for his totals. He had two of the team's 12 three-pointers.
Dunham scored 12 of his 23 points in the second half and finished with five three-pointers.
Darius Scott had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Ty Davis dished eight assists.
The Warriors came out on fire, hitting eight three pointers (on 11 tries) in the game's first 12 minutes to go up 34-19. By the time the first media timeout was called, the Warriors were up 21-5.
Humboldt State (15-9, 9-7 CCAA) did storm back and lead early in the second half. A 7-0 run gave the Lumberjacks a 51-46 lead at 14:38.
But the Warriors kept fighting back to disallow any sustained rallied by HSU. After a Calvin Young layup that tied the game for the eighth time at 65-65 at 6:40 on the clock, a Dunham three-pointer sparked the offense and Stan State never trailed again.
Stanislaus State host Chico State Saturday on Alumni Night at 7:30 p.m. Chico State (7-9, 6-9 CCAA) was off Thursday.
