TURLOCK —
Rylan Tinsley's first collegiate start was one to remember, for sure.
The true freshman lefty threw a gem to lead Stanislaus State as the Warriors shutout a powerful No. 8 ranked Azusa Pacific, 3-0, Saturday.
Then, senior closer
Chase Wheatcroft threw another three-inning save as Stanislaus State improved to 3-2.
Azusa Pacific, blanked in a regular season game for the first time since 2016, is now 3-2 as well.
Tinsley, a freshman from Stockton's Weston Ranch High School, allowed just two hits and struck out seven in six innings of work. He started the game fanning four of the first six Cougars to take command. Tinsley retired 12 of the first 13 batters before a single in the fifth. He did strikeout two more APU batters to leave runners at the corners in the inning.
Tinsley would go 1-2-3 in the sixth with a 1-0 lead before turning it over the Wheatcroft.
Matt Elser belted a two-run homer to left in the sixth to make it 3-0.
Wheatcroft had to earn his save this time, though. With runners at the corners in the seventh, he fanned Joe Quire to end the inning. In the eight, a Cougar reached on a close call, but a double-play grounder and a flyout ended the APU threat.
After APU got back to back singles to start the ninth, Wheatcroft again induce another double-play for two outs. He then got Griffen Herrera to pop-up to short to end the game.
Braeden Oki went 3-for-4 and
Vinny Margiotta had the other RBI.
