Error leads to big inning as Cal State L.A. takes series opener

LOS ANGELES — A mistake led to a big Cal State L.A. as the host Golden Eagles capitalized with a seven-run inning to beat the Stanislaus State Warriors, 10-4, Friday night to open the four-game series in Los Angeles.

The Golden Eagles scored seven times, with four unearned runs, in the second inning off Stan State ace Chase Wheatcroft to suddenly quiet the streaking Warriors. Stanislaus State was riding high after a great offensive weekend with three wins at Cal State Monterey Bay falls to 13-8 overall and 9-6 in the CCAA.

That series against CSUMB also started with a game-one loss with Wheatcroft on the mound, although that ended up with a 10th inning heartbreaker.

This time around, Cal State L.A. (8-12, 7-9 CCAA) jumped out in front with a 7-1 lead in the second. Stan State had scored in the first inning with a Vinny Margiotta sac fly. Wheatcroft allowed 10 hits in four innings and gave up eight runs but only three of those runs were earned.

Margiotta, who also doubled in a run in the fifth, went 1-for-2 and Braeden Oki was 2-for-4 with two doubles.

L.A. starting pitcher Nick Moisant threw eight innings and gave up just one earned run on five hits. He struck out eight and walked one.
