TURLOCK — After 40 runs scored in the first two games of the series, today's games were mainly about good pitching — by both sides.
Stanislaus State (17-11, 11-9 CCAA) hurlers dealt the Coyotes just two single runs in the double-dip as the Warriors swept the twinbill, and the four-game series, over Cal State San Bernardino (9-19, 6-17 CCAA).
It is the Warriors' first four-game sweep over a CCAA opponent since when they swept the CSUSB Coyotes in San Bernardino.
Rylan Tinsley threw seven-plus to lead the Warriors to a 2-1 game one win. Then
Kevin Hahn went five sharp innings in the 4-1, 7-inning finale, win.
The bullpen helped out, too, as
Brandon Scott and
Matt Pulos each picked up a save.
Tinsley, the heralded freshman southpaw, struck out eight and gave up just a run on two hits in 7 1/3 innings for the longest outing of his young career. He improve to 5-2 by out-dueling Cal State San Bernardino's Blake Timm, who threw eight innings and allowed two runs on eight hits.
Stan State scored in the first on a ground out by
Alexis Paz.
Vinny Margiotta made it 2-0 with a RBI single to left in the third inning. Meanwhile Tinsley dealt zeros on the top half of the scoreboard.
Tinsley exited the game in the eighth after a walk and a sac bunt and handed the ball to Scott. Scott recorded a strikeout before allowing a solid single to left for a Coyote run ahead of a grounder that ended the inning. Scott, then, needed just 11 pitches in the ninth to get a strikeout and two groundouts for the save.
Margiotta and
Dalton Seymour each had two hits in game one.
The finale featured CSUSB's Tyler Williams (who entered the game with 47 strikeouts, second in the CCAA) and Warriors' Hahn.
Hahn got some offensive support early, getting a 3-0 lead, while he gave up just one unearned run on five hits with five strikeouts to improve his personal record to 4-2. Then, Pulos pitched two perfect innings, facing just six batters, with four more strikeouts to record his third save.
Pulos extended his hitless streak to 15 2/3 innings in six relief appearances. He has 24 strikeouts in these six outings.
Williams gave up three runs on six hits and fanned just two in four innings of work to drop to 1-6.
Paz,
Jack Large,
Grant Bunker and
Matt Elser each had two hits in the second game. Elser drove in two runs.
