Warriors Split on Day One of Tournament of Champions

TURLOCK – The Warriors were designated the away team while at their home field for both of their games on Friday to start off the Tournament of Champions. Stanislaus State showed whose home it really was when they dominated against the Nighthawks and came out strong at the end of the game against the Cougars.

Just as the Warriors looked like they were going to end the nightcap with a loss of 3-5, they scored three explosive runs in the seventh against the Cougars taking them to a lead of 6-5.  Unfortunately, the Cougars also had a good seventh inning and scored two, earning them the walk-off win of 7-6.

The Warriors had an incredible game against the Nighthawks of Northwest Nazarene. They had eight hits, seven RBI and seven runs. They also had one extra base hit when Desiree Gonzalez doubled through the left side in the top of the fourth. Against the Cougars, the Warriors had a total of six runs, eight hits and five RBI. Aliyah Garvin and Sydnee Machado both hit triples against APU.

Desiree Gonzalez had an incredible day going 3 for 6 overall. Gonzalez not only had three runs but she also ran in three against NNU.

Aliyah Garvin went 4 for 8 with one run and two RBI. Garvin tripled to center in the third but wasn't able to score. Sydnee Machado also had a great day and went 3 for 5 with two RBI and a run along with her triple in the fourth.

The Nighthawks were held to one run and five hits. Kyndra Marzorini earned the win pitching 5.1 innings and striking out four. Azusa Pacific had 13 hits and seven runs. After the loss to Azusa, Marzorini went 1-1 for day one.

Despite splitting on day one, the Warriors had their game faces on and fought in each game. They may have been the away team in both games but that didn't stop them from showing their home-field advantage when they were up to bat and on defense.

Stan State will be back at the Warrior Softball Field tomorrow for day two of the tournament, to take on Concordia-Irvine at 3 p.m. and Western Oregon at 5:30 p.m.
