SAN MARCOS —Stanislaus State rebounded in a huge way on Saturday as the Warriors pounded Cal State San Marcos 17-7 and 11-4 to sweep a doubleheader.
The Warriors scattered 30 hits with 11 extra base hits to score those 28 runs to improve to 19-12 overall and 15-10 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Stan State rebounded from a 14-8 loss Friday late afternoon.
Cal State San Marcos falls to 14-19, 10-17 CCAA.
In the Saturday double-dip,
Jack Large had five hits with three doubles and drove in four runs.
Alexis Paz went 4-for-7 and scored four times while
Grant Victor,
Brandon De La Guardia each had four hits.
Vinny Margiotta drove in four more runs in the twinbill.
Tyler Murphy (4-2) and
Rylan Tinsley (6-2) were the winning pitchers on the day and
Matt Pulos recorded his fourth save in the first game.
The Warriors have scored in double digits in nine games this season.
Two five-run innings keyed the first game on Saturday as the Warriors used 20 hits to score those 17 runs.
Matt Elser's solo homer in the third sparked the offense as Stan State tagged on four more runs, highlighted by a two-run double by Large to take the lead at 5-4.
Stanislaus scored five more runs in the sixth for a 12-5 lead en route to the blow out win. The first five Warriors in the batting order went 13-for-28, scored 10 runs with eight RBI to lead the charge. Paz, Large and De La Guardia each had three hits.
Murphy threw five innings and gave up five earned run on seven hits with seven strikeouts. Pulos pitched four scoreless innings for the save. He gave up two hits — his first two in relief — ending the hitless streak at 16 1/3 innings. He still has not allowed a run in 19 2/3 innings.
The scoring continued in the second game with two more crooked numbers. Stan State plated four runs in the second and five in the fourth for a 9-1 lead. Run-scoring double by Large and RBI triple by
Grant Bunker highlighted the four-run second. Then, Margiotta drove in two runs with a double in the fourth to spurt another rally.
Stan State hit eight doubles, two triples and a homer in the doubleheader. Four pitchers held CSU San Marcos to a .238 average on the day while the Warrior offense batted .405.
The series finale is Sunday at 11 am.
