Otters spoil Paz extra inning homer, Pulos' great relief effort

SEASIDE — A free base, an intentional walk and two doubles resulted in a tough extra inning loss as Cal State Monterey Bay scored twice in the 10th to beat the Warriors, 6-5, Friday afternoon.

Stanislaus State had rallied back with key hits and a great relief outing by Matt Pulos against one of the better West Region teams at its home field. However, in the end, the Warriors walked off with the heart-breaker defeat to fall to 10-7, 6-5 CCAA. Cal State Monterey Bay is 11-8, 9-4 CCAA.

Alexis Paz's solo homer in the top of the 10th had given the Warriors a 5-4 lead after trailing 4-1 after three innings. That homer had supported Pulos' stellar show on the mound in relief of starter Chase Wheatcroft. Pulos threw four shutout and hitless innings and struck out eight batters.

However, Tommy Stropky hit an Otter to start the 10th. A double set up second and third which led to an intentional walk to load the bases, hoping for a force out or double-play. Instead, Brian Morley doubled in two runs for CSUMB's walk-off win.

The comeback started with a Braeden Oki RBI single in the fifth to make it 4-2. Then a two-run seventh with RBI singles by Oki and Vinny Margiotta tied the game. Pulos came in and cruised and capped off the performance by striking out the side in the ninth.

Paz led off the 10th with a solo homer on a 1-0 pitch for the go-ahead score. He also had a double and went 3-for-5 for the game. Grant Victor and Brandon De La Guardia each also had three of the Warriors' 14 hits.

Wheatcroft had his Stan State record consecutive scoreless innings pitched streak end at 28 innings. He walked the first batter in the first but got two quick outs. However, a Kyle Czaplak double to center scored T.J. Dove.
