TURLOCK — Freshman pitcher
Kyndra Marzorini won her third consecutive start with another great outing as Stanislaus State split a non-conference doubleheader against Academy of Art on Friday.
Marzorini threw a five-hit shutout in the 3-0 game one win before Art U got even in the nightcap with a 2-1 victory. Academy of Art (3-4) got a nice start from its left-handed starter Cecilia Lopez in the nightcap.
The Warriors snapped a five-game winning streak and are now 9-14 overall.
Marzorini struck out six in her third consecutive complete game win. In her last three starts she had allowed just one run in 21 innings with 11 strikeouts. Marzorini continues to lead the CCAA with 67 strikeouts.
Three runs were all Marzorini needed for the win. The Warriors scored in the first on an infield hit by Marzorini. Then
Deja Guzman doubled in two runs in the fourth for the 3-0 lead.
Aliyah Garvin went 3-for-4 and Guzman had two hits with those two runs batted in.
In the second game, however, lefty Lopez some-how limited the Warriors with a bunch of grounders and pop-ups. Lopez only needed 75 pitches to stop Stan State. She threw seven innings without allowing an earned run and struck out two.
Lia Tom was 2-for-3 with a RBI — a single to right that scored Garvin in the first inning. She also doubled.
Megan Stacy took the loss in the circle in game two despite a decent start. In the fourth inning she only needed three pitches to get three ground-outs, but ran into trouble in the fifth.
Kylie Ragsdale faced the minimum of six batters with three strikeouts in the final two innings.
