TURLOCK — Fresno Pacific dampened the Warriors' home opener on Saturday as the Sunbirds narrowly took home the 4-3 decision in some tight matches.
Under last year's Division II scoring format, the Warriors would have won the match 5-4. Instead, now that the doubles wins count as one point, Stan State has to take the one-point loss.
The Warriors swept through doubles play, winning all three matches to earn one single point.
Cassidy Ferrell and
Kayla Nguyen won at No. 1 doubles with the closely contested match, 7-5.
Maria Ochoa and
Megan Hagerty paired up to win at No. 2 and
Amila Gogalija and
Taylor Galya won at No. 3 doubles.
Last year, the Warriors would have taken a commanding 3-0 lead into singles competition.
Still, out of the six singles contests, three wins would secure a team victory — the Warriors got two.
A decisive match came down to No. 5 where
Sylvana Talamantes could secure the win late in her battle with Gaya Soloman. Talamantes won the first set 6-4 but Soloman scored 6-4 in the second to tie. Talamantes had match point in the third set, however, before dropping the 7-5 score.
Meanwhile, Ferrell took her top singles match over Marina Lex, 6-1, 6-4 and Ochoa won at No. 3 in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, over Alice Di Matteo.
Ferrell improved to 5-1 in singles play this season.
