TURLOCK — The Warriors would probably like a mulligan for game two on Friday.
After winning a second consecutive well-played, well-pitched game in the first of the day's doubleheader, Stanislaus State gave away game two early as the Warriors split the doubleheader with Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The Warriors won game one 4-1, but dropped the seven-inning nightcap, 11-2. They are now 25-18 overall and 21-16 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Stanislaus State answered Cal State Dominguez Hills' first inning run with a two spot and cruised behind pitchers
Tyler Murphy and
Brandon Scott for the win.
Grant Bunker singled in
Braeden Oki then
Grant Victor's squeeze bunt plated
Brandon De La Guardia for the 2-1 lead. Stan State never looked back.
Nathan Gutierrez went 2-for-3.
Murphy turned in another quality start, going seven innings and gave up just a run on four hits. Scott threw two shutout innings and gave up just a single with two strikeouts for his fourth save.
In the second game, though, two throwing errors with two outs in the first seemed to set the tone for the rest of the shorten game. Those errors led to two unearned runs in the inning. Then in the second another error extended the inning and ultimately resulted in three more Toro runs for a 5-0 score.
Michael Wyatt blasted a two-run homer to right to make it 5-2 in the third, but CSUDH scored runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh to run away. Dominguez Hills (15-26, 14-25 CCAA) also hit a few infield hits as part of its 12-hit parade.
The nine-run margin was the Warriors' largest in a defeat this season and they have lost not by more than four runs since the 14-8 game on March 29 at Cal State San Marcos.
Rylan Tinsley, who is still looking for his eighth win, lasted 3 1/3 innings and gave up seven runs — with only three earned — on six hits.
Toro starter Ian Codian threw all seven innings, gave up two runs on four hits and struck out seven for the win.
The series finale is on Saturday at Noon.
