STOCKTON — Baseball is a funny game.
One night after pounding out 13 hits and smashing four deep homers in a big 11-6 win over Chico State, the Warriors were unable to figure out #21 Cal State Monterey Bay's Daniel Harris as Stanislaus State dropped a 8-2 game Thursday night.
The Warriors will have to try and stay alive in the CCAA Baseball Tournament on Friday with an elimination game versus San Francisco State. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Banner Island Ballpark. The SF State Gators lived to see another day here in Stockton with a 5-1 upset over top-seeded UC San Diego earlier on the day.
Stanislaus State, now 30-22 overall, managed just six hits against an Otter who entered the game with a 3-5 record and a 5.33 ERA.
Thursday night, Harris went eight innings and struck out 10 and scattered six hits for his best outing of his career.
Warrior starter
Tyler Murphy was great in what Warrior Nation hopes it was not his last outing of his tremendous career. He threw a lot of pitches with many full counts, but he got outs. Murphy struck out nine in six innings but gave up four runs on five hits.
Meanwhile, CSUMB managed to get what it needed from the ballpark. They got hits to get on base and then hit homers that were aided by the Banner Island Delta breeze. Brian Morley's three-run shot to right went out just as the wind changed directions to right. Nick Sheehan homered to left on a fly ball that ended a streak of nine consecutive batters retired by Murphy.
The Warriors had lead-off batters on for most part of the night but were not able to get them around.
Jack Large went 2-for-4 with a RBI and
Nathan Gutierrez doubled to account for the Stan State offensive highlights.
Vinny Margiotta drove in a run in the first inning on an infield hit to make it 2-1.
Cal Poly Pomona eliminated Chico State with a 17-3 win on Thursday. The Broncos will play Cal State Monterey Bay Friday morning at 11.
