IRVINE –The Warrior softball team is back in season and traveled to Irvine this weekend to play in the Concordia Kickoff Classic Tournament.
The team unfortunately struggled against Biola ending that game with a mercy-rule loss, 0-8. Against Hawaii Pacific, the teams went into extra innings tied at 4-4 until the Sharks stole the game with two late runs in the eighth and the Warriors fell 4-6.
The Warriors are now 0-2. The Eagles are 1-0 while the Sharks are 1-0.
KEY PLAYERS OF THE DAY
- Aliyah Garvin went 2-for-5 overall on Friday with one hit.
- Desiree Gonzalez was the front runner of game two with two runs, going 1-for-5 overall for the day.
- Joerdan Lovell ran in two, going 2-for-5.
- Payton West had a good game against Hawaii Pacific when she went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
- Megan Stacy had her first loss of the season as she pitched four innings against Biola and struckout two.
- Kyndra Marzorini pitched eight against Hawaii Pacific, striking out five but unfortunately had her first loss for the season.
AN OVERALL TEAM EFFORT
- Unfortunately, the Warriors struggled against the Biola University Eagles and had to end that game at a short five innings.
- Against Biola, Stan State went 2-for-15. Against HPU, the Warriors went 7-for-31 but were able to grab four runs.
- Over the entire day, the Warriors had a total of four RBI, 38 putouts, nine hits and four runs.
- The team picked up their momentum as they entered the second game of the day but fell short in extra innings.
- The first three innings against the Sharks were long for the Warriors as the Sharks would score once each inning.
- It wasn't until the fourth when West and Gonzalez would score to catch up to HPU.
- The Warriors would score twice again in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead 4-3. Unfortunately, the top of the sixth is when the Sharks would tie the game and eventually take it in the end.
NOTEWORTHY
- The Eagles were predicted to finish fourth in the PacWest this year while the Sharks were predicted to finish fifth.
- The Warriors came out at finishing eighth in the CCAA preseason poll this year.
- This is the first time the Warriors have played Biola University, now the team is 0-1 against the Eagles.
- The Warriors are 9-14 against the Sharks. The last time the two teams met was in April 2017 when the Warriors lost 2-3 in a game that went eight innings.
