Stan State suffers another tough loss as its rally comes up short

TURLOCK — For the third straight game, the Stanislaus State Warriors lost a heartbreaker as they battled tough, had their opponent on the ropes, before coming up short in the end.

Thursday night, in front of more than 1,300 loud student-crowd on Homecoming Night, the Warriors nearly upset No. 23 ranked Cal State San Bernardino before dropping a 78-70 decision.
 
CSUSB shot 52 percent from the field and had four players in double digits to improve to 13-3 in CCAA play to keep pace with front runner UC San Diego (16-1).
 
Warriors of the Night
Ty Davis nearly had his third straight 20-point game. This time he scored 17 for the game and 13 in the second half to lead the Warriors. He also had five assists and three steals.
Darius Scott scored 13 points on rapid firing mode. He took 21 shots (and made five) and was 3 of 13 from the three-point arc. It was his sixth consecutive double-digit scoring game.
Fred Lavender netted 12 points.
Xavier Francois pulled eight rebounds to go with nine points.
 
The Differences of the Game
• The Warriors took 19 more shots than CSUSB but was out-gunned 52 to 34.8 percent from the field shooting.
• The Coyotes scored 42 points in the paint — most of these from Andres Villa (17 points) and Daytone Jennings (18).
• CSUSB tried 28 free throws (made 22 for 78.6 percent) versus the Warriors' 13 of 16 from the line.
 
Teams Took Turns on Runs
• The Warriors used a 13-2 run to start the second half, including 11 straight points, to take a four-point lead at 15:55.
• At 47-46 CSUSB, the Coyotes used a 10-2 run to make it 57-48, their biggest lead of the second half.
• Stan State battled back again to tie the game at 61-61 on a Darius Scott three-pointer at 6:31.
• After CSUSB get back up by 7 points, the Warriors got within two after a pair of Ty Davis free throws.
 
CCAA Standings Update
• Stanislaus State remains in fifth place at 9-8, now three games behind Chico State (11-4) for fourth (and a chance to host a CCAA tournament first round game)
• Cal State East Bay lost on Thursday, meaning the Warriors are ½ game ahead.
 
Up Next
The Warriors host Cal Poly Pomona Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. It will be Hall of Fame and Alumni Night as the latest induction class of Warrior Athletics Hall of Fame will be introduced at halftime.
