Young guns and more great hitting led Warriors to twinbill, series sweep

TURLOCK — The Warriors are 6-0 for the first time since 2011 as Stanislaus State took both games of the doubleheader to sweep the three-game series over Shippensburg.

With more solid hitting and strong pitching performances, mostly from young arms, the Warriors beat the Raiders 7-2 and 9-4 on Saturday.
 
Stan State will take a 6-0 record into next week's California Collegiate Athletic Association opener, Friday night at home, against Sonoma State.
 
Top Warriors of the Day, on Offense
Zach Jones went 5-for-7 with two doubles and drove in five runs in the double-dip. In the nightcap, he was 3-for-3 with four RBI.
Grant Bunker had three hits with two doubles and drove in four runs on the day.
Jacob Garcia had two hits but reached based three other times on free passes. He also stole two bases.
 
Top Warriors of the Day, on the mound
• Freshman Tyler Meyer improved to 2-0 with the game one win. After allowing two runs in the first, he returned 13 of the next 15 batters. He ended up with five innings pitched, allowed two runs on five hits with four strikeouts.
Anthony Ramirez, also a freshman, threw four hitless innings, allowed just two base runners, to completely shutdown the Raiders.
• Freshman Casey Carr, the game two starter, struck out six in 4 2/3 innings of work. He gave up two runs on two hits, but walked five.
Tommy Stropky fanned two batters in one inning pitched.
Maxwell Pappas struck out the side in the top of the ninth in the finale.
 
Big Day On Offense
• As a team the Warriors batted .317 on the day (versus SU's .161 average).
• The Warriors pounded out 20 hits — 10 in each game — with five doubles. They outscored the Raiders 16-6 in the twinbill.
• The Warriors were also 6-for-6 in stolen bases.
• Stan State was 10 for 26 (.385) with runners in scoring position on Saturday.
 
Noteworthy
• True Freshman pitchers threw 15 of the day's 18 innings.
• The 2011 team started 7-0 and then went 10-1 en route to a 26-21 season.
• The Warriors batted .323 and out-scored Shippensburg 26-12. The Raiders batted .220.
• The team ERA was 3.67 (compared to SU's 7.12).
 
On Deck
The Warriors begin the CCAA season on Friday as they host Sonoma State. First pitch is at 6 p.m.
