Cameron Bushéy, a former assistant at Gonzaga, was recently named by head coach
Morgan Cathey as the Stanislaus State men's soccer assistant coach.
Bushéy was previously a men's soccer assistant coach at Gonzaga University from 2018 to 2020. He has experience at the university and college levels, as well as coaching in youth soccer clubs.
"To have a coach with such high character and soccer experience joining the program is an incredible win!" said Cathey, who returns to Stan State for his second stint, this time as head coach of the program. "He is someone who will bring a great passion to everything he does here at Stan State and I believe will help us set standards of excellence in every area."
Bushéy was a collegiate athlete at Whitworth University from 2007-2011 (prior to coach
Morgan Cathey's arrival at Whitworth). As an athlete, Cameron was second team All-Region, two-time second team All-Northwest Conference and a part of the first team All-Northwest Conference.
"This first year will be a really enjoyable challenge to lay the foundation for who we are, how we will be, and what we will be," said Bushéy, who hopes to bring many new lessons to the team and to encourage his athletes to not play soccer with fear.
"The ball is the most important thing in the game, and we are going to try to have it more than our opponents all the time. That is a tough challenge in soccer, but we will not fear it at all," he added.
Sophomore forward,
Dayne Sturtevant, said that he is excited to see what the future holds with his new coaches. He's had the opportunity to train with Bushéy and Cathy during the few weeks of spring soccer prior to the stoppage.
"I think our new assistant coach, Cameron, is very positive. I'd say he very well knows what he is doing just from the first few weeks with him. I'm glad to have him as a new coach and see what the future holds," said Sturtevant.
The sense of community among the Warrior staff, the university and the people in the valley was a major factor in Bushéy deciding to move to California from Spokane, Wash., to become the Warriors' next assistant coach.
"I am huge on community," said Bushéy, "The way our department has come together, cared for each other, and helped one another is really impressive to me. There are lots of reasons to say 'yes' to Stan State, but most of all, I am here for the community and my belief in a bright future here."
Cathey said that Bushéy will bring a great amount of knowledge and well-roundedness to the men's soccer coaching staff and team. According to Cathey, Bushéy comes from a long line of great coaches in his family and his knowledge will provide great backing to the vision to the team, the university and the greater Central Valley at large.
Bushéy wants his athletes to take advantage of every experience in their college careers and not miss on any opportunities.
"My biggest advice to student athletes is to take advantage of every aspect of this college experience. It's really easy to lose sight of all that we are granted an opportunity with in this time," said Bushéy.
