Warriors Open CCAA Play with Scoreless Tie

TURLOCK — The Stanislaus State women's soccer team made it two matches in a row unbeaten Friday, playing Cal State Monterey Bay to a 0-0 tie in double overtime in both teams' California Collegiate Athletic Association opener at Warrior Stadium.

The Otters (3-1-3) entered the night as the No. 7-ranked team in the West Region, and already with a 2-1 win over the Warriors (3-3-1) on Sept. 12 in their pocket. But Stanislaus State played them much tougher in the conference opener, getting off more shots, collecting more corner kicks and making more saves than in their first non-conference meeting more than two weeks ago.

Cal State Monterey Bay outshot the Warriors, 19-10, but a majority of those shots were taken from far outside the box. The Otters had their best opportunity with just over 10 minutes left in regulation, putting three shots on goal in a matter of two minutes. But Stan State goalkeeper Amanda Leal made all three saves, part of five stops she made in her fourth shutout of the season. She now has a Goals Against Average of 0.69 on the season.

"Defensively I thought we were very solid tonight," said Stanislaus State head coach Gabriel Bolton. "We really limited Monterey's opportunities to long shots from 25-35 yards."

The Warriors took 10 shots – four more than in their meeting with CSUMB in Seaside – but only one was on goal. Ilena Rivera broke free and got a strong leg on a ball from the top of the box, and Otters 'keeper Aubrey McKessy made the save to keep the game scoreless early.

"Offensively, our team had trouble keeping it and sharing it," said Bolton. "Our possession, communication and movement were just a bit off tonight."

Stanislaus State next hosts Cal State Dominguez Hills at 2 p.m. Sunday in a CCAA match. Fans can purchase tickets and find all live coverage links on WarriorAthletics.com.
