LOS ANGELES — A closely contested match that was quiet for 70 minutes Sunday ended in a flurry, with three goals being scored in a matter of 15 minutes, and host Cal State L.A. emerging victorious in a narrow 2-1 California Collegiate Athletic Association win over the Stanislaus State women's soccer team at University Stadium.
Â
Julia Cummings got the Warriors (4-4-2, 1-1-2 CCAA) on the board in the 87th minute with her third goal of the season, tying her for the team lead. She headed in a free kick that was sent in by
Jenna Zuniga. But that goal came after Cal State L.A. had scored twice in a matter of 80 seconds just 14 minutes earlier.
Â
The Golden Eagles (1-7-2, 1-2-1 CCAA) got back-to-back goals in the 72nd and 73rd minutes, first from Kaelah Basurto, then from Natalie Reynoso. Basurto banged in a rebound after Stanislaus State goalkeeper
Amanda Leal had made a diving stop on Morgan Patea's shot. That made it 1-0 after 71 minutes of scoreless soccer. Then, Reynoso stole a ball in the defensive zone and was able to send it into an empty net to make it 2-0.
Â
"Sometimes the game is cruel," said Stanislaus State head coach
Gabriel Bolton. "We created a lot of chances in the first half and just couldn't score. Unfortunately, we let L.A. stay in the game and they took advantage of their opportunities.
Â
"I'm proud of how we fought to the end and did our best to come back. We just came up a little short."

The Warriors next host Humboldt State at 4:30 p.m. Thursday before traveling to Chico State on Sunday. Fans can purchase tickets and find all live coverage links on WarriorAthletics.com.
