Warriors Tally Another Shutout, Take Down Lumberjacks

TURLOCK — Another shutout? Another strong presence inside the box? Another opponent stifled?

Just another night for the defense of the Stanislaus State women's soccer team.

The Warriors got back in the win column Thursday with a 2-0 California Collegiate Athletic Association shutout victory over Humboldt State at Warrior Stadium, their seventh shutout of the season and fifth in their last six games.

"Defensively we did a great job limiting them to shots from long distance," said Stanislaus State head coach Gabriel Bolton. "Amanda (Leal) took care of anything that got past the back line, which wasn't much. Jenna (Zuniga) showed tremendous leadership tonight organizing the backs."

Humboldt State (3-5-4, 0-3-2 CCAA) fired 22 shots, but a large chunk of those came from 20 or more yards away, as the Stanislaus State (5-4-2, 2-1-2 CCAA) defense denied them all night long. The Lumberjacks put nine balls on goal, but Leal made all nine saves, her second-most in a match this year.

Leal is in the midst of one of the best seasons all-time for a Warriors goalkeeper. Her seven shutouts after Thursday's win are already tied for seventh-most in a single season at Stanislaus State. Her 0.61 Goals Against Average would be second all-time in a season, and her current save percentage of .879 would be the best ever for a Warrior.

Of course, the Stan State offense also played a big role in the triumph. Rayana Plancarte put the Warriors ahead 1-0 in the 15th minute with her fourth goal of the year. A corner kick was sent in along the end line, which Ilena Rivera poked further into the box. Daisy Martinez threw a leg into the scrum in front of the net to poke the ball loose, and Plancarte finished it right in front of the net.

The Warriors got their second goal six minutes later when Humbolt State inadvertently headed the ball into their own net for an own goal. Mikaela Enriquez had plenty of space to work with about 35 yards out, so she settled and sent a long ball into the box, looking for Rivera. Instead, a Lumberjacks defender tried to clear the ball with a header and sent it straight into the net, making it 2-0.

"We knew their goalkeeper is aggressive on crosses and we wanted to challenge her," said Bolton. "Mikaela hit a beautiful ball into the mix. It's great to get back on the winning track today. Good teams grind out wins and that's what we did tonight."

The Warriors will travel to Chico State on Sunday for an 11:30 a.m. CCAA contest. Fans can find all live coverage links on WarriorAthletics.com.
