TURLOCK — Three closely played sets each wound up going the visitor's way Friday, as Cal State San Marcos erased multiple deficits to earn a tightly contested sweep of the Stanislaus State volleyball team, 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-21), in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match at Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena.
Â
Stanislaus State (10-11, 6-7 CCAA) was up 15-10 and 20-16 in the first set, 5-4 in the second, and 5-0 to start the third, but Cal State San Marcos (11-8, 8-5 CCAA) put together comeback rallies each time. The Cougars scored four straight points in the first to tie it at 20-20. Then after the Warriors scored back-to-back points for a 22-20 advantage, CSUSM answered by scoring five of the next six points to win the opening frame, 25-23.
Â
The Cougars controlled most of the second set, only trailing the one time early. And even in answer to that, they scored three consecutive points and six of the next nine to never look back and win, 25-19.
Â
The third set proved to be the most competitive, with 10 ties and five lead changes between the two teams. Both teams also had their finest offensive performances in the third, hitting over .330 each. CSUSM and Stan State were tied at 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19. But like the first set, the Cougars closed strong. They scored six of the final eight points, which included two aces and three kills from three different players, to win the final frame, 25-21, and clinch the sweep.
Â
Cassie Corbett was the Warriors' best hitter on the night at a .286 clip with seven kills. She trailed only
Kiara Erving, who led Stanislaus State with eight kills.
Macky Morris also had seven terminations to go with two blocks, two digs, two assists and an ace.
Â
Cal State San Marcos had two players with 10 kills each – Emily Vander Weide (.304 hitting percentage) and Kassy Doering (.261). Setter Madison Turner posted a double-double with 27 assists and 10 digs. The Cougars had 12 service aces in the match, with five different players collecting at least two.
