POMONA — Back-and-forth action early on Friday at Kellogg Stadium brought visions of a great battle to ensue between two teams atop the early California Collegiate Athletic Association standings, but two unanswered goals carried Cal Poly Pomona to a 3-1 CCAA triumph.
The Broncos (4-2-3, 1-0-2 CCAA) grabbed the early advantage with a goal in the fifth minute. Eduardo Faria punched in a goal off a pass from Paul Henschke to give CPP a 1-0 lead. But the Warriors (5-4-1, 1-2-0 CCAA) wouldn't let that go without an answer.
Just four minutes later,
Finn Hoffmann found
Josh Santillan, who fired a shot from about 22 yards out to the top-right corner, knotting the score at 1-1. Hoffmann had ran back and forth up and down the midfield, dancing around many defenders before connecting with Santillan. It was Santillan's second goal of the year.
The Broncos would add two more goals to go on to victory, one in the first half and an insurance score in the second. Max Laguna put Cal Poly Pomona up for good in the 28th minute off another assist from Henschke, making it 2-1. Then Henschke scored his own goal in the 87th minute, sealing the win by putting the score at 3-1 with less than four minutes to play.
Stanislaus State next travels to No. 19 Cal State L.A. for another big CCAA match at 2 p.m. Sunday. Fans can find all live coverage links at WarriorAthletics.com.
