POMONA — The Stanislaus State volleyball team battled Thursday night, but host and nationally ranked Cal Poly Pomona stood strong, as the No. 19 Broncos beat the Warriors, 3-0 (25-22, 25-15, 25-21), in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match at Kellogg Arena.
Â
The Warriors (12-13, 8-9 CCAA) held leads in both the first and third sets, but the Broncos (21-3, 14-3 CCAA) finished strong both times. Stanislaus State led 21-20 in the first and was four points away from taking a 1-0 match lead. Cal Poly Pomona answered with a 5-1 run, though, thanks in part to three kills – two from Jazminn Parrish – to turn the tables and win the opening frame, 25-22.
Â
The third set was a similar battle. A 7-2 Stan State run gave it a 16-15 lead midway through, and a back-and-forth points exchange moved the Warriors' advantage to 18-17. CPP answered late in the set with its own 7-2 run to go up, 24-20, putting it in position to eventually win the set, 25-21, and complete the sweep.
Â
The Broncos dominated the second set, never trailing after running out to a 6-0 lead. They'd go on a 6-1 run in the middle of the set to push their lead to 22-11, and then scored three of the last four points to win it, 25-15, and take a commanding 2-0 match lead.
Â
The Warriors were led by
Kiara Erving and
Yisel Perez, who both had eight kills.
Macky Morris and setter
Ambria Schneringer both had six kills apiece, with Morris hitting an impressive .455 on the night and Schneringer hitting .333.
Gabby Rawson led the team with 15 digs, and
Haley Burdo was tops with 15 assists.
Â
Cal Poly Pomona's Daisy Duke had a match-high 13 kills while hitting .333. Kira Zimmerman drove the Broncos' offense with 35 assists.
Â
Thursday's defeat eliminated Stanislaus State from contention to qualify for the CCAA Tournament. The Warriors hung on until the final weekend, faced with back-to-back road matches against two nationally ranked opponents – the top-two teams in the conference. All during interim head coach
Maci Murdock's first season with the program.
Â
The Warriors wrap up their 2021 season at No. 3 Cal State San Bernardino at 7 p.m. on Friday. Fans can find all live coverage links on WarriorAthletics.com.
