TURLOCK — Kyanna Davis is off to a hot start in 2021-22.
Â
Davis posted her second straight 20-point performance in as many days Saturday and very nearly had her first career triple-double, as she and two of her underclassmen teammates led the Stanislaus State women's basketball team to its first win of the year, a 76-67 non-conference triumph over Northwest Nazarene on the final day of the CCAA-GNAC Crossover Tournament at Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena.
Â
Davis scored 25 points against the Nighthawks (0-2) and had nine rebounds and nine assists, narrowly missing out on the elusive triple-double. She also had two steals while sinking three more 3-pointers, just like she did Friday in her 23-point showing against Central Washington.
Â
The fifth-year veteran forward wasn't alone, though. Freshman
Da'Myiah Lewis exploded for 20 points while also grabbing six rebounds, two steals and dishing an assist – all in 26 minutes off the bench.
Liliana Marques hit four 3-pointers and scored 15 points to go with four rebounds and a steal.
Â
Stanislaus State (1-1) used a huge fourth-quarter push to overcome what had been a 10-point deficit late in the third. Northwest Nazarene led 58-48 before
Joia Armstrong hit two free throws to end the third quarter. Stan State started the fourth by outscoring NNU, 18-1, making it a 22-1 run overall that flipped it from a 10-point deficit to an 11-point lead at 70-59.
Â
All kinds of things went wrong for the Nighthawks during the Warriors' run. They committed six turnovers, part of their 23 on the afternoon. They went 0 for 6 from the floor and 1 for 4 from the free-throw line for the first eight minutes of the final period, and they committed three fouls, two of which resulted in four free throws made for Stanislaus State. The Warriors outscored the Nighthawks 26-9 in the fourth quarter alone, bringing back bad memories for NNU, who was outscored 22-7 in the fourth on Friday against Cal State East Bay, also blowing a nine-point lead in the process.
Â
Back-to-back 20-point games aren't anything new to Davis. She's done it three times before in her career, last achieving it with 20 points against both Notre Dame de Namur and Chico State on Nov. 16 and 21, 2019. The Warriors also handled foul trouble well on Saturday. Three players fouled out of the game, including starting center
Kaleigh Taylor who was gone with more than two minutes to go in the third. Her replacements Armstrong and
Lavinia Moa both fouled out as well, but players like Davis, Lewis and Marques picked up the slack.
Â
Stanislaus State next travels to Fresno State on Wednesday for an exhibition contest against the NCAA Division I foe. The Warriors are back in Fitzpatrick Arena on Friday and Saturday for another home tournament, hosting Holy Names University and Academy of Art from the PacWest Conference, as well as Cal State East Bay again, for the Warrior Classic.
