Warriors Push Fresno State in Exhibition

FRESNO — The Stanislaus State women's basketball team started and finished strong on Wednesday, putting on an impressive performance on the road at NCAA Division I Fresno State, but it was the Bulldogs who came away with the 88-71 exhibition win at the Save Mart Center.

The Warriors (1-1) outscored the Bulldogs (2-1) in both the first and fourth quarters. Stan State "won" the first quarter, 21-18, and the fourth, 23-19. Fresno State did all of its necessary damage in the middle periods, including a dominating third quarter in which it outscored Stanislaus State, 33-16. The Bulldogs shot 55% from the field in the third with four 3-pointers, and used an 18-6 run in the middle of the frame to turn a nine-point advantage into a 21-point lead at 64-43.

Stanislaus State came out firing in the first, making nine of 18 shots (50%), including three treys. The Warriors limited the Bulldogs to 33.3% shooting in those first 10 minutes. But for as hot as they were in the first, the Warriors went cold in the second quarter, only making two field goals (2 for 15) while shooting 13.3% from the floor. The Warriors saw their 3-point and free throw struggles return, too, on Wednesday. They shot 27.8% from deep and 58.3% from the field against Fresno State. They have yet to shoot over 30% from 3-point range or at least 60% from the charity stripe in any of their first three contests this season.

Stan State had three double-digit scorers, led by 15 points from both Liliana Marques and Da'Myiah Lewis. Kyanna Davis added 11 points. Lewis logged a double-double with a game-high 10 rebounds as well. Davis nearly missed a double-double with nine boards of her own. Stanislaus State dominated the Bulldogs on the glass, outrebounding them, 51-40.

Fresno State got 21 points each from the Cavinder sisters, Haley and Hanna. Haley turned in a double-double with 10 rebounds. They also both had four assists and two steals each. Yanina Todorova poured in 16 points.

The Warriors are back home starting Friday hosting the four-team Warrior Classic tournament, featuring Cal State East Bay, Academy of Art and Holy Names. Action starts on Friday at 5 p.m. Fans can find all live coverage links on WarriorAthletics.com.
