Warriors Hold Down Hawks in Warrior Classic Opener

TURLOCK — The Stanislaus State women's basketball team bullied an undersized Holy Names team on Friday night, outrebounding and outshooting the Hawks to win their opening game of the Warrior Classic, 65-49, at Fitzpatrick Arena.

The Warriors (2-1) outrebounded the Hawks (0-4), 52-41, and held them to just 25.4% shooting (15 for 59). Stanislaus State also collected 14 steals while forcing 20 turnovers. They took the lead four minutes into the first quarter and never trailed again thanks to a 15-2 run that gave them a 12-point advantage at 19-7.

Holy Names did their own frustrating of the Warriors, using what ended up being an 11-0 run across the first and second periods to pull back within one at 19-18. Stan State went 0 for 4 shooting and had three turnovers during that stretch. The Warriors recovered in the third period and pushed its lead back to double digits by limiting HNU to just two field goals while outscoring them, 15-9, in the frame.

Stanislaus State had four players score in double figures. Kaleigh Taylor led the way with a season-high 16 points and 10 rebounds for her fifth career double-double. Kyanna Davis finished with 13 points and nine rebounds. Davis' all-around performance also included six assists, four steals and a block. Amaya Mcleod hit three 3-pointers on her way to 10 points, and Joia Armstrong also scored 10 in 20 minutes off the bench.

Holy Names had three players score double-digit points. Samantha Lemay-Zambrano's 13 off the bench was the team high, with Jadyn Anderson and Jayden Benitez scoring 10 each. 10 different HNU players grabbed at least one rebound and seven scored at least two points.
