FRESNO — A strong second-half push Wednesday earned the Stanislaus State women's basketball team its fourth straight win in a row, as the Warriors came from behind on the road to beat Fresno Pacific, 65-57, at the Special Events Center.
Â
The Warriors (4-1) trailed by three at halftime, 32-29, and the Sundbirds (3-2) hit a 3-pointer to start the second half to push their lead to six. But the Warriors spent the next three minutes scoring eight straight points to take a 37-35 lead. FPU went 0 for 5 during that Stan State run.
Â
And when Fresno Pacific pushed back later in the quarter to take another two-point advantage at 42-40, the Warriors buried them with a 13-0 run that spanned the third and fourth periods, giving them a commanding 11-point lead, capped by a 3-pointer from
Kyanna Davis that made it 53-42 two minutes into the fourth.
Â
"Tonight, we got a quality effort from everyone," said Stanislaus State head coach
Wayman Strickland. "Our team's cohesiveness, focus and poise paid off. Down the stretch, we were able to make multiple rotations on defense and rebound. We also consistently were efficient on offense."
Â
The Warriors only made one 3-pointer all night – that nail-in-the-coffin long ball from Davis in the fourth – but they still shot over 40% from the field (44.6%) and were over 70% from the free-throw line (73.7%) for the second straight game. Meanwhile, the defense held FPU to under 30% from the floor overall (29.2%) and from deep (26.3%).
Â
Four Warriors did all but two points of the scoring for the team.
Da'Myiah Lewis scored a game-high 17 points.
Liliana Marques put up 16 points for the second straight game. Davis and
Kaleigh Taylor both scored 15 points. Davis was one rebound shy of a double-double for the third time this season, grabbing a team-high nine boards. She also had three assists, three steals and two blocks.
Lavinia Moa had the team's other two points to go with four rebounds and two blocks in 21 minutes off the bench.
Â
Fresno Pacific was led by Anisa Rillo's 15 points. Maesyn Rix had a game-high 12 rebounds with seven points, an assist and a block.
Â
The Warriors return home on Saturday to open California Collegiate Athletic Association play against Chico State. The game is part of a doubleheader with the men's team, with the women's game tipping off at 5:30 p.m. Fans can find all live coverage links on WarriorAthletics.com.
