Warriors Win Fifth Straight in CCAA-Opening Victory

TURLOCK — There looks to be no immediate solution for stopping Kyanna Davis.

Davis went for her fourth 20-point game of the season Saturday, setting a new career scoring high for the second time this year with 27 points to lead the Stanislaus State women's basketball team to a 68-64 California Collegiate Athletic Association win over Chico State.

Davis scored 17 of her career-high 27 points in the first half. She scored in all kinds of ways against the Wildcats (3-3, 0-1 CCAA), slicing into the paint, shooting from long range, and getting to the free-throw line. She went 9 for 19 from the floor including three 3-pointers and was also 6-of-8 at the line.

Davis also collected seven rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block on Saturday. Her most important steal came with fewer than five seconds to play in the game. Stanislaus State (5-1, 1-0 CCAA) only led by two, 66-64, with 4.8 seconds and Chico State inbounding the ball. Davis lept up and deflected the inbounds pass from Charity Gallegos, ran to collect the loose ball and drew a clutch foul. She went to the line and knocked down both free throws to put the game away at 68-64.

Davis' multi-category statistical performance Saturday marked the third time this season she's had at least one tally in all five statistical categories (points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks), and the fourth time she's been in at least four of those categories. She's recorded stats in a minimum of three statistical categories in all six of the Warriors' games this season.

Liliana Marques (12 points) and Da'Myiah Lewis (11) each posted their third straight double-digit scoring game. Lewis led the Warriors with nine rebounds and a season-high four steals. Chico State was led by Bailey Jones' 15 points. Haley Ison added 10, while Jordan Morris pulled down 10 rebounds to go with seven points.

The Wildcats didn't let the Warriors get their fifth consecutive win easily. They very nearly tied the game with fewer than 10 seconds to go. It was Davis who committed what could have been a costly turnover at the eight-second mark, throwing a pass across the key through traffic and into the hands of Morris. But Davis made up for it four seconds later with her heroic steal and trip to the foul line.

The Wildcats led by as much as four in the first quarter, pushed that to six in the second, and led by one, 31-30, at halftime. The Warriors used an 8-1 run early in the third period to jump back ahead by seven at 41-34, then used a 10-3 stretch in the same quarter to extend their lead to 11 at 51-40. Marques, Lewis and Davis all hit 3-pointers in the third to power Stan State's surge.

Chico State wasn't done though, as it nearly erased a seven-point deficit in the fourth thanks to 3-pointers from Charity Gallegos and Myli Martinez. Martinez's trey made it a two-point contest at 64-62 with 2 minutes, 21 seconds to play, and after the teams traded baskets, it was still only a one-possession game with only 34 seconds remaining.
Saturday's win was the second consecutive season the Warriors opened CCAA play with a win over Chico State (2019-20). The win made the teams even in their last 10 matchups dating to the 2015-16 season, with each winning five.

The Warriors continue CCAA play next weekend with a trip to Southern California. They'll face Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday and Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday. Fans can find all live coverage links on WarriorAthletics.com.
