Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lewis' Late-Game Heroics Hand Warriors Sixth Straight Win

POMONA — Same situation. Different hero.

For the second straight game Thursday, the Stanislaus State women's basketball team used a key steal and clutch free throws in the final seconds to get a thrilling victory, this time with Da'Myiah Lewis coming through to help the Warriors extended their win streak to six with a 59-58 California Collegiate Athletic Association triumph over Cal Poly Pomona at Kellogg Arena.

Lewis had just tied the game at 58-58 with only 28.2 seconds left in the game on big back-to-back free-throws. The Broncos (2-4, 1-1 CCAA) had the ball with a chance at the final shot and escaping with the win. They tried to run a set play, but the Warriors disrupted those plans by tipping the ball out of bounds on the sideline with 5.5 seconds left. Now it was a matter of how quickly CPP could get the ball in the hoop.

Sydney Fedinec dribbled the ball outside the 3-point arc and drove in looking for an open teammate. When she tried to cross her dribble, that's when Lewis took advantage. She swiped the ball away from Fedinec with seeming ease, stealing it and dribbling away in one swift move. Fedinec pulled on her arm to foul her and send Lewis to the line with just 0.8 seconds on the clock.

Lewis sank the first free throw to put the Warriors (6-1, 2-0 CCAA) ahead, then purposely missed the last one strong off the back iron, even battling to grab her own rebound as the final second ran off the clock, sealing the victory for Stan State.

It was all around a huge night for Lewis. She scored 20 points for the second time this season and logged her first career double-double with a season-high 13 rebounds. She narrowly missed out on a triple-double while setting a new program record with nine steals in the game, breaking the record of eight last done by Caprina Pipion against Sonoma State on Nov. 29, 2018.

Kyanna Davis scored 17 points with five rebounds and two steals for the Warriors. Kaleigh Taylor added 13 points with eight boards and a steal. Stanislaus State had 22 steals in the game, their most in a game in at least the last 15 seasons (since 2006-07). Jayda Villareal and Rebecca Islas both led Cal Poly Pomona with 12 points each. Islas added a team-high 11 rebounds for a double-double.

The Warriors' sixth win in a row marks their longest streak since 2015-16, when they won seven straight during the month of January 2016. Their 2-0 start to CCAA play is the fourth time in the last six seasons (since 2015-16) that they've started at least 2-0 in conference. Thursday was also the Warriors' second straight win over the Broncos in Pomona, dating to their upset win in the first round of the 2020 CCAA Tournament.

Momentum swung back and forth all night long Thursday, not just in the final seconds. Stanislaus State used a 14-3 run in the first quarter to lead by seven, 19-12, after one. Cal Poly Pomona scored six of the last eight points in the second quarter to lead by three at halftime, 33-30. They expanded that lead to as many as 10 in the third period thanks to back-to-back 3-pointers from Ayah League and Jayda Villareal, and free throws from Fedinec.

But the Warriors whittled away at their deficit. Cal Poly Pomona shot just 2 for 13 from the floor with eight turnovers after taking that that 10-point, 46-36 lead with 2:22 left in the third. The Broncos shot nearly 50% in the first half (12 for 25) and only had a three-point lead to show for it. That dropped to less than 30% after halftime (26.1%), including going 2 for 10 in the fourth quarter alone. They also missed four free throws in the final period and went 14 for 22 (63.6%) in the game from the charity stripe.

Stanislaus State had its own shooting woes on the night, shooting a season-low 26.4%. It went 2 for 25 (8%) from deep and like CPP was also under 70% from the line (61.3%). But even with the struggles, the Warriors won the game at the free-throw line, making nearly as many free throws (19) as the Broncos attempted (22) – on top of riding Lewis' clutch performance at the line in the final 30 seconds.
