TURLOCK — The Stanislaus State women's basketball team just keeps finding a way.
Without their senior star for the first time this season, a group of seven underclassmen and newcomers worked their way back from a double-digit deficit and held on to win the team's 10th game in a row – a 55-52 comeback California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over Sonoma State at Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena.
Senior forward
Kyanna Davis' 20.1 points, 8.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.8 steals were missing from the floor for the first time in 11 games for the Warriors this season. That didn't stop freshman guard
Da'Myiah Lewis from stepping up into the spotlight. She turned in her third 20-point performance of the season with a season-high 23 and added four rebounds, four steals and three assists to lead Stanislaus State.
Transfer guard
Liliana Marques also scored in double figures with 11. She chipped in six boards, four steals and three assists. Sophomore point guard
Taylor Pilot scored eight points, tied for the team lead with seven rebounds, and had had two assists and two steals. Junior transfer
Lavinia Moa also had seven rebounds to go with six points and a steal.
Stanislaus State (10-1, 5-0 CCAA) closed the game on a 10-3 run, including a 6-0 winning stretch in the final two minutes – and yet it still took two missed free throws with two seconds left to preserve the triumph. With 2.0 seconds remaining on the clock, Sonoma State's Jayme Blackard went to the line for two free throws and a chance to win it. But she missed both, with Moa securing the rebound to wrap it up. Lewis scored six of the Warriors' final 10 points to lead them to victory.
That was the second trip down the floor with under a minute to go where Sonoma State (2-8, 1-2 CCAA) didn't score. Their previous possession before Blackard missed her potential game-winning free throws went for naught when Taylor Johnson was called for an offensive foul, turning the ball over with 45 seconds left and keeping Stan State ahead by one, 53-52.
Sonoma State outshot and outrebounded the Warriors on Saturday – the third game in a row opponents have done so to Stan State. And once again, it was the Warriors' defense that stepped up. The Warriors' defense held the Seawolves to 4-for-21 shooting from 3-point range, including 1 for 7 in the fourth quarter. They forced SSU to commit 25 turnovers, collecting 11 steals along the way, leading to 14 points.
Sonoma State led by as many as 10 in the second quarter. It jumped out to a 10-2 lead to start the game while outshooting the Warriors, 44.0% to 26.9%, in the first half. The third quarter turned the tide for Stan State, as it took a turn doing the shooting, out-dueling Sonoma State, 42.9% to 30.0%. The Warriors didn't take their first lead of the game until the fourth quarter, but they whittled what had been a 10-point second quarter and five-point halftime deficit down to one point at 40-39 through three periods.
