Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Otters Come from Behind to Beat Warriors

SEASIDE — The Stanislaus State women's soccer team took an early lead on the road Sunday and the defense extended its shutout streak to over 210 minutes, but host Cal State Monterey Bay scored two unanswered goals to come from behind and earn a 2-1 non-conference victory at the Otter Soccer Complex.

Skyler Hoy scored her first goal of 2021 in the 13th minute to stake the Warriors (2-2) to an early 1-0 lead. She was assisted by Ilena Rivera on the play, who has now notched an assist in each of her last two games. It also marked the third straight game in which Stanislaus State scored first.

"Skyler scored a terrific goal that was the result of all-out effort and a wonderful finish," said Stanislaus State head coach Gabriel Bolton. "Monterey Bay just outplayed us today. They were better in every phase of the game and played beautiful soccer."

The Stanislaus State defense extended its opponent scoreless streak to 218 minutes and 30 seconds on Sunday, blanking the Otters (2-0-2) for the first 27 minutes of the game. But Cal State Monterey Bay finally broke through in the 28th minute, getting a game-tying goal from Alexandra Diaz, her second goal of the year, thanks to an assist from Monica Hrncir.

The Stan State defense went right back to work in a 1-1 game, keeping the Otters off the scoreboard for the next 41 minutes – nearly an entire half's worth of time. But Cal State Monterey Bay was able to tally the game-winning goal in the 70th minute, a score off the foot of Jasmine Safarians from Natalia Leroux.

"Even though we took the lead in the first half, we really struggled," said Bolton. "This is a tough place to play and it took us time to adjust. The second half was better, but still not to our standard.

"We learned a lot today and will get back to work to prepare for Saturday's match against a terrific opponent."

The Warriors next host preseason Great Northwest Athletic Conference favorite Seattle Pacific on Saturday. Fans can find all live coverage links on WarriorAthletics.com.
