FRESNO — Another game, another win, and another step towards the way head coach
Morgan Cathey and the Stanislaus State men's soccer program expect 2021 to be.
The Warriors earned their second win in a row Thursday, this time going on the road and holding off Fresno Pacific for a 2-1 non-conference victory at Ramirez Field.
Dayne Sturtevant did all the scoring for the Warriors (2-2-1), posting his first career multi-goal game with scores in both the first and second halves. Sturtevant's first goal came in the 33rd minute. Sturtevant split the Fresno Pacific (1-2) defense thanks to a pass from
Daniel Gomez – the same player who assisted on the game-winning goal in overtime Sunday versus Academy of Art – for his first goal of the season and a 1-0 Stan State lead.
Sturtevant's second – and eventual game-winning – goal came during the second half in the 59th minute.
Adrian Yepez's first assist of 2021 helped set up the scoring opportunity and put the Warriors ahead, 2-0.
That would prove monumental, as the Sunbirds earned a penalty kick opportunity in the 84th minute. Fellipe Souza converted the chance, cutting the deficit to 2-1. Souza would get off two more shots in the final five minutes of the game, but both of them were blocked by the Stanislaus State defense. Stanislaus State goalkeeper
Sebastian Castellanos also made a season-high six saves, only allowing the penalty kick goal to seal the victory for the Warriors.
Stan State next travels to UC Santa Cruz for a non-conference game on Wednesday. Fans can find all live coverage links on WarriorAthletics.com.
