Warriors Complete Season Sweep of Seawolves on the Road

ROHNERT PARK — Three Warriors scored double-digit points Thursday and the Stanislaus State men's basketball team completed a season sweep of California Collegiate Athletic Association rival Sonoma State with a 70-59 road win at The Wolves' Den.

Marlon Short scored a season-high 15 points and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Leading scorer Tony Singleton scored 13 while adding five assists, three steals and a block. Benno Zecic chipped in 10 points, narrowly missing a double-double with nine rebounds, as well as five assists, two steals and a block.

Stanislaus State (5-9, 2-7 CCAA) had 20 assists on 26 made field goals in the game, its second-most assists in a game this season. Stan State's highest assists total in a game this year also came against Sonoma State (3-16, 3-10 CCAA) back on Dec. 18, when it totaled 21 in a 76-55 win. Thursday marked the Warriors' first season sweep of the Seawolves in four years, since the 2018-19 campaign.

SSU had four players score in double figures, but none had more than the 11 points scored by both Michael Smith and Jaylen Wells. Sonoma State shot 33.9% to the Warriors' 48.1%, and was 23.3% from 3-point range while Stan State shot 36.0% beyond the arc.

The teams went back and forth in the first 15 minutes of the game, trading the lead 11 times with neither squad leading by more than five. But a 14-4 run by Stanislaus State before the end of the half gave it its biggest lead up to that point at seven points (41-34). The Warriors would never trail again, leading by as many as 13 in the second half before winning by 11 – their fourth of five wins this season coming by double digits.

Stanislaus State next returns home to host Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday and Saturday, respectively. Fans can find all live coverage links on WarriorAthletics.com.
