Stan State Pulls Off a 3-2 Upset Against the #13 ‘Yotes

TURLOCK – It was a David vs. Goliath-esque matchup for the home club, who took on one of their toughest opponents yet. In a valiant five set effort, the Warriors managed to make history, tying their highest ranked win since a victory against #13 Cal State LA in 2008.

Leading the way for Stanislaus State was the three-headed snake of Ellison Weaver's 18 kills, Haley Burdo's 34 assists (marking a new career-high), and Gabby Rawson's 32 digs (also a record high). The 'Yotes were stunned early in the first set, as Stanislaus got the ball rolling with a 6-0 scoring run. Mariah Iosua once again was a much-needed spark plug for the team with three big time kills in the first set. San Bernardino battled back into the match, but the Warriors never lost the lead for the full opening set, finishing 25-23.

The 'Yotes regained control after a rough first set, maintaining a strong lead up until their 23rd point. Makenna Carrillo, Macky Morris, and Weaver all did their part to put points on the board in an effort to take the 2-0 lead, but let the set slip away 24-26.

Set three remained tight up until the halfway point, as San Bernardino took the momentum and pulled away for a 14-25 set win. Cassie Corbett did what she could off the bench to help the team offensively, while Alex Byrd, Autumn Kirby, Eyriana Eatmon, and Weaver each combined for two block assists.

The Warriors made another early 4-0 run to begin the fourth set. Burdo and Eatmon connected their hitters on some timely kills down the stretch. Stan State once again maintained the lead for the entire set, giving hopes of an upset and energy to the Fitzpatrick Arena in a 25-17 final.

In the deciding fifth set, the two teams traded blows as Macky Morris and other Warrior hitters came in clutch before intermission. A service ace from Rawson and an Ellison Weaver kill was just what the Warriors needed to seal the deal on a 15-12 upset win over #13 San Bernardino.

Next up for the Warriors is Cal State East Bay on the road Thursday, Oct. 20th.
