Stan State Posts Fifth Shutout With 1-0 Road Win Over Otters

SEASIDE, Calif.----  Stan State improved to 7-3-4 overall and 4-2-2 in the CCAA after a 1-0 road win over Cal State Monterey Bay this afternoon at Cardinale Stadium in Seaside, Calif.  Alexia Estrada had ten saves on the afternoon en route to her fifth shutout in goal for the Warriors.  Sabrina Cabrera scored her fifth goal of the season in what proved to be the game-winning goal for the visitors in the 12th minute. 

FIRST HALF: Cal State Monterey Bay (6-6-3, 3-4-1 CCAA) looked like it was going to take the lead in the third minute when Maya Richardson's shot was snagged by the Warriors' Alexia Estrada.  Eight minutes later, the Warriors took the 1-0 lead on unassisted goal by Sabrina Cabrera, her fifth of the season.  The Otters had two chances to tie the match, but Estrada and the Warrior defense came up with two key saves.  Stan State's Alexia Brewah looked like she was going to double the Warriors' lead, but Maleni Morales stopped her attempt in the 24th minute.  The visitors had two more chances in the 27th minute to double their lead, but Morales stopped Taylor Lucas and Cabrera's shot on goal attempts.  Estrada made two more saves in the final 13 minutes including the last one in the 43rd minute off the foot of Jasmine Safarians to send the match into the half with Stan State leading 1-0. 

SECOND HALF:  Alexis Brewah's shot on goal attempt to give the visitors a 2-0 lead was snagged by Morales in the 46th minute.  A minute later, a Warrior was called for a red card and Stan State had two play the rest of the half a person down.  It looked like CSUMB was going to take advantage, but Estrada stopped Tiger Rendon's attempt in the 58th minute. Estrada made her final save of the afternoon in the 69th minute.  Cal State Monterey Bay had two chances in the final ten minutes of the match, but Natalia Leroux and Safarians saw their attempts go right of left of the goal as Stan State held on for the 1-0 victory.

THE 5'S HAVE IT:  With her ten saves on the day, Alexia Estrada recorded her fifth shutout of the season.  This was her third match with ten or more saves.  Her season high was 14 against Sonoma State.  Sabrina Cabrera scored her fifth goal of the season. 

THREE-WAY TIE FOR FOURTH PLACE:  With their 1-0 win today, the Stan State Warriors are now in a three-way tie for fourth place in the CCAA with three matches left in the regular season. Cal State Los Angeles and Sonoma State are tied for fifth place each with 16 points.  The Warriors have 14 points as does Chico State and Cal State San Marcos.  The top six teams at the end of the regular season will receive a berth to the CCAA Championships, October 30, November 4-6.  The top two seeds will receive a first-round bye.  The first round will be played at the higher seeds (#3 and #4). The semi-final and finals will take place at Sonoma State University.

UP NEXT:  Stan State will finish off its 2022 regular season with a three-match home stand beginning this Friday, October 21 at 4:30pm versus Cal State Los Angeles.  The Warriors will host Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday, October 23 at 11:30am.  They will finish off their regular season on Thursday, October 27 at 11:30am versus Cal State East Bay.  Prior to the match against Cal Poly Pomona, Stan State will recognize its seniors.
