TURLOCK, Calif.---- Stan State finished its opening weekend of the 2022-23 regular season 1-1 after a 65-57 win over the visiting Fresno Pacific Sunbirds in the final game of the Stanislaus State Crossover Classic. Three Warriors scored in double figures paced by
Marlon Short's 18 points. All-Tournament honoree,
Kobe Ordonio, finished with 16 points and
Tony Singleton added 12 points for the victors.
FIRST HALF: Fresno Pacific (0-2) jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game capped by two free throws by Marten Maide. The Warriors cut the deficit to 11-8 in the next three minutes. An
Isaiah Jones' jumper cut the FPU lead to just two (15-13), but a three by Kyle Monk increased the visitors' lead to 20-15 with just eight minutes left in the half. A Darrin Person, who also made the All-Tournament Team, hit a lay-up to give FPU a 24-16 lead at the 6:34 mark of the first stanza. A
Marlon Short jumper off a pass from
Kobe Ordonio capped a 10-1 run by the Warriors as they cut the FPU lead to 26-25 with two minutes left on the clock in the first half. An old-fashioned three-point play by Person increased FPU's lead to 33-27. A lay-up by Short off a pass from
Benno Zecic cut the deficit to 33-29 heading into half-time.
SECOND HALF: The Warriors continued their run to begin the second half as they tied the game at 33-33 just two minutes into the new stanza on a jumper by Ordonio off a pass from Zecic. Another old-fashioned three-point play by Person increased the Sunbirds' lead to 36-33. The Warriors took their first lead on a jumper by Short off a pass from Ordonio with 16:11 on the clock. Stan State (1-1) increased its lead twice to four including on a lay-up by
Travion Williams off another assist by Ordonio. A
Jeremiah Jones' jumper gave the hosts a 46-40 lead. FPU's Kyle Monk three cut Stan State's lead to 46-43 with 11:41 left in the game. A Williams lay-up off a dime by
Tony Singleton as the Warriors outscored the Sunbirds 10-7 in the next five minutes to give the Warriors a 56-50 lead.
Two free throws by Nate Kendricks cut FPU's deficit to 58-55 with 3:14 to go in regulation. A trey by Singleton and a layup by Singleton both from passes from Zecic on the Warriors' next two possessions increased their lead to 63-55 with just two minutes to go in the game. FPU scored the net two points on free throws by Person, but a Singleton jumper made the final 65-57 Stan State.
ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM: Kobe Ordonio was named to the Stanislaus State Crossover Classic All-Tournament while FPU's Darrin Person was selected to the six-member team. Point Loma's Kaden Anderson was the tournament Most Valuable Player and Brian Goracke from the Sea Lions was also on the team. Cal State East Bay's Grady Lewis and Dimitrios Klonaras was the final two named to the All-Tournament Team. Point Loma finished the classic 2-0 after defeating Cal State East Bay 68-62 earlier this evening in the third game of the classic.
A TRIO IN DOUBLE FIGURES: Three Warriors scored in double figures to lead the way for Stan State.
Marlon Short paced the Warriors with 18 points on nine-for-16 shooting from the field.
Kobe Ordonio added 16 points while
Tony Singleton scored 12 points for Stan State.
DEFENSE: Stan State forced 19 turnovers by the Sunbirds this evening including 14 by steals.
Kobe Ordonio had a team high four steals with
Benno Zecic recording three.
Marlon Short and
Tony Singleton each had two assists and the trio of
Isaiah Jones,
Matt Bender and
Will Pallesi each had one.

UP NEXT: Stan State will finish off its season beginning three-game home stand this Tuesday, November 18 at7:30pm when the Warriors host Dominican (Calif.). The Warriors will travel to Rohnert Park, Calif., to participate in the Ron Logsdon Basketball Challenge, presented by Cambria Hotel Sonoma Wine Country, on the campus of Sonoma State, November 18-19. They will face Western Oregon on November 18 at 5pm and Minnesota State Mankato on November 19 at 2pm.
