ROHNERT PARK, Calif.--- Stan State trailed by eleven with 5:33 left in regulation, but cut the Minnesota State (5-0) lead to just two with 39 seconds left. The Mavericks went two-for-three from the line to take the 80-76 non-conference victory at the Ron Logsdon Classic in Rohnert Park.
Kobe Ordonio paced the Warriors with 20 points off the bench.
Benno Zecic added 14 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals for Stan State. Also scoring in double figures for the Warriors were
Tony Singleton and
Marlon Short each with 12 points.
FIRST HALF: The first five minutes of the game was even with
Kobe Ordonio's jumper giving Stan State (1-4) an 11-10 lead. A three by Trevor Moore capped a 19-7 run by Minnesota State as the Mavericks took a 29-20 lead. The Warriors outscored their opponents 16-7 in the next eight minutes to tie the game at 36-36 on an
Isaiah Jones' lay-up. Kelby Kramer's jumper gave Minnesota State (5-0) a 36-34 lead heading into the locker room.
SECOND HALF: Stan State outscored the Mavericks 7-4 in the first minute of the new half and took a 41-40 lead on a
Benno Zecic three off a pass from
Kobe Ordonio. A three by Malike Willingham capped a 22-8 run by the Mavericks to give them a 62-49 lead with eleven minutes on the clock. They increased their lead to 74-58 on a Harrison Braudis jumper at the 7:28 mark. Stan State (1-4) wouldn't go away as the Warriors cut the deficit to 75-71 on a jumper by Zecic with just 2:45 left in regulation. A three by Willingham increased the Mavericks' lead to seven on their next possession. An old-fashioned three-point play by
Marlon Short cut the Warrior deficit to 78-76 with just thirty-nine seconds on the clock. Minnesota State went two-for-from the line in the final seconds and the Mavericks forced a Stan State turnover as they held on for the 80-76 non-conference win.
3/5: Kobe Ordonio recorded his third twenty-point game of the season in the Warriors' first five games this evening. He scored 20 points off the bench for Stan State. Ordonio went eight-for-16 from the field while connecting on one trey. He went three-for-three from the line while dishing out three assists.
FOUR IN DOUBLE DIGITS: Besides
Kobe Ordonio's 20 points, three other players scored in double figures for the Warriors.
Benno Zecic had 14 points with
Marlon Short and
Tony Singleton each scoring 12 points.
FORCED 15: Stan State's defense forced 15 turnovers this evening with six coming on steals.
Benno Zecic and
Daniel Ameyaw each had two with
Will Pallesi and
Travion Williams each with one.
UP NEXT: The Warriors will return home for a matinee showing with Academy of Art this Tuesday, November 22. Stan State will entertain the Urban Knights this Tuesday with tip-off scheduled for 5pm at Fitzpatrick Arena. After Thanksgiving, Stan State will travel to Chico, Calif., to begin its conference season with a 3pm match-up with Chico State.
