Strong First Quarter Keys Stan State’s 67-60 Win over Sunbirds

TURLOCK, Calif.---  Stan State outscored the visiting Fresno Pacific Sunbirds 25-5 in the first quarter to key the Warriors' 67-60 victory at The Fitz.  Makayla Rose paced the Warriors with a season high 23 points on eight-for-16 shooting from the field.  Joia Armstrong recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. 

FIRST QUARTER: Stan State scored the first seven points of the game with Makayla Rose scoring four of her season high 23 points for the Warriors in the first three minutes of the quarter. A Liliana Marques three off a Jadyn Patterson assist increased the victors' lead to 18-5 with just three minutes left in the first quarter.  Stan State (3-2) scored the last seven points of the quarter capped by a Alexis Woodson jumper as the Warriors took a 25-5 lead into the second quarter.

SECOND QUARTER: Fresno Pacific (4-2) scored the first six points of the second quarter to cut the Warrior lead to 25-11.  A Rose jumper off a Marques assist capped 13-1 run by the Warriors as they took a 38-12 lead with 3:39 left in the first half.  The Sunbirds finished the quarter outscoring 12-4 to cut the Stan State lead to 42-24 heading into the locker room.

THIRD QUARTER:  A Rose jumper increased the Warrior lead to 17 (44-27) two minutes into the second half.  Two free throws by Rachel Barry capped a 14-4 run by the visitors as they cut their deficit to 48-41. FPU kept its second half rally going as with a minute left in the third quarter, the Sunbirds cut the Stan State lead to 51-46.  A free throw by Amaya McLeod gave Stan State a 52-46 heading into the final ten-minute quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER: The Sunbirds scored four of the first six points of the fourth to cut their deficit to 54-51 in the first ninety seconds of the last quarter.  A Woodson free throw increased the Warrior lead to 57-51 with a little under five minutes left in regulation.  The Sunbirds didn't go away as a Felicia Dourva two-pointer made it just 57-55 Stan State with 3:08 on the clock.  Armstrong scored the next four points for the hosts in the next minute as the Warriors increased their lead to 61-55.  Stan State went four-for-six from the charity stripe in the final two minutes to secure the 67-60 non-conference victory.

DOUBLE-DOUBLE:  Joia Armstrong recorded her second double-double of her career and first of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds.  She also had three assists.  Armstrong went five-for-eleven from the field and six-for-eight from the charity stripe.  Liliana Marques just missed a double-double as she tied her season with 12 rebounds while scoring nine points.  Marques had three assists and two steals in 33 minutes.

SEASON HIGH: Makayla Rose scored a season high 23 points this evening to lead the way for Stan State.  She was eight-for-16 from the field including one-for-two from three-point land and six-for-ten from the line.  Rose also had three steals and two rebounds for the Warriors in 33 minutes.

50-36: The Warriors won the battle of the boards this evening 50-36 including grabbed 16 offensive rebounds.  They scored 30 points in the paint compared to FPU's eight. 

DEFENSE: Stan State held the Sunbirds to just 26% shooting from the field including 29% from three-point land.  The Warriors forced 17 FPU turnovers with six coming on steals.  Makayla Rose had three steals and Liliana Marques added two and Jadyn Patterson one.

UP NEXT: Stan State will begin CCAA play this Saturday, November 26 at 1pm in Chico, Calif., for a match-up with the Chico State Wildcats. The Warriors will return home on December 1 to face No. 19 and defending CCAA Champion, Cal State San Marcos at 5pm at The Fitz.
