TURLOCK, Calif.--- The visiting Cal State San Marcos Cougars used a 17-2 run mid-way through the second half to key their 75-69 CCAA victory over Stan State this evening at The Fitz. The Warriors lost despite having four players in double digits led by Will Pallesi's 17 points. Kobe Ordonio chipped in 16 points, Marlon Short added 12 and Benno Zecic had a double-double with 10 points and 10 assists.
FIRST HALF: A Joel Mensah jumper six minutes into the game gave Cal State San Marcos (2-4, 2-0 CCAA) a 16-6 lead to begin the game. A Travion Williams lay-up off a pass from Benno Zecic capped a 19-8 run by the Warriors as they took a 25-24 lead with 6:46 on the clock in the first half. The Cougars came right back and took a 31-28 lead on a Greg Milton III jumper with a little less than four minutes left in the first stanza. Stan State used an 11-3 run in the final four minutes capped by two Marlon Short free throws to take a 39-34 lead into the locker room.
SECOND HALF: A Will Pallesi three off of one of Zecic's ten assists gave the Warriors a 51-40 lead six minutes into the second half. A Kobe Ordonio three at the 10:52 mark of the second half gave Stan State (2-6, 0-2 CCAA) a 56-45 lead. The Cougars would not go away as they went on a 17-2 run to take a 62-58 lead with 4:25 left in regulation. A Zecic three off a pass from Williams cut the Cougar lead to 64-63 at the 2:14 mark of the second half. Two free throws by Jayce McCain increased the Cougar lead to 72-65 with just thirty-three seconds2 left in the game. An Ordonio lay-up late in the game cut the deficit to 74-69, but it was a little too late as the Cougars took the 75-69 victory.
ONCE AGAIN: For the seventh time in eight games, Stan State had at least three players in double digits in scoring. This time the Warriors had four in Will Pallesi (17 points) followed by Kobe Ordonio with 16 points, Marlon Short with 12 points and Benno Zecic with 10 points.
DOUBLE-DOUBLE: Benno Zecic had a double-double this evening with 10 points and 10 assists in 34 minutes. This was Zecic's first of his career at Stan State. For the season, Zecic has 53 assists and 26 turnovers.
CONTROLLED THE BOARDS: Stan State won the battle of the boards this evening, 32-25. Travion Williams paced the Warriors with nine rebounds followed by Marlon Short's seven. Benno Zecic grabbed six and Kobe Ordonio had five rebounds and Will Pallesi grabbed three.
UP NEXT: Stan State will host Cal State Los Angeles this Saturday, December 3 at 3pm at The Fitz. The Golden Eagles defeated Chico State earlier this evening, 67-65, in Chico. After Saturday, Stan State will return to the road for a pair of games next week in Northern California. The Warriors will face Sonoma State on Thursday, December 8 at 7:30pm in Rohnert Park. They will travel to Arcata to Cal Poly Humboldt on Saturday, December 10. Both games' tip-offs are set for 7:30pm.
