Warriors Finish Strong at No. 24/12 Cal State San Marcos

SAN MARCOS — Liliana Marques led a trio of double-digit scorers Thursday for the Stanislaus State women's basketball team, but the Warriors ran into first-place and No. 24/12-ranked Cal State San Marcos, which won its 14th consecutive game with an 80-70 California Collegiate Athletic Association win at The Sports Center.

Marques led the Warriors (12-8, 7-7 CCAA) in scoring for the second straight game with 15 points. She also had four rebounds and a game-high three steals. Joia Armstrong scored 13 points with six rebounds and an assist, and Taylor Pilot scored 12 with seven boards, two steals and an assist. All three players shot 50% or better, with Pilot leading the way on 5-for-7 (71.4%) shooting.

Cal State San Marcos (18-2, 16-1 CCAA) – ranked No. 24 in this week's WBCA poll and No. 12 in the latest D2SIDA poll – boasted four double-digit scorers and had 13 players appear in the game. It got at least two points from 11 players and at least one rebound from 12. The Cougars shot 48.2% on the night, but it was a dominant second quarter that made all the difference.

CSUSM outscored Stan State, 30-11, in the second quarter alone, turning what was a three-point contest after one period into a 22-point lead (48-26) at halftime. The Cougars shot 69.2% (9 for 13) from the floor, 66.7% (2 for 3) from 3-point range and 90.9% (10 for 11) from the charity stripe in those 10 minutes. It was an 18-2 run over the quarter's final four minutes that turned the tides. Stanislaus State shot 1 for 6 and had five turnovers during that span.

Stanislaus State had their big answer in the fourth quarter, outscoring CSUSM, 24-13. It entered the frame down 21 points. A 10-0 run over two minutes late in the game cut the lead to 10, but a missed 3-pointer followed by the Cougars running out the clock ended the threat.

Stanislaus State next travels to Cal State LA on Saturday for the teams' first matchup of the season. Game time is set for 1 p.m. Fans can find all live coverage links on WarriorAthletics.com.
